Our primary focus is on Orange County, California, which is the sixth largest county by population in America. We hope our work here serves as a model for other communities who seek well-being and opportunity for all. A substantial portion of our work focuses on supporting safe and thriving Jewish life here and in Israel.
We work towards achieving our mission through three main approaches:
Invest
We support catalytic community forces whose innovations yield a higher quality of life and more sustainable future for everyone. Our investments include a range of financial and non-monetary assets.
Unite
We cultivate multisector cooperation that generates the will and the ways to achieve lasting, equitable community well-being. This can take the form of convening, using our network to connect likeminded leaders and organizations, and co-developing partnerships.
Model
We inspire adaptation by other communities to scale the impact of proven programs. What works here in Orange County may not be culturally appropriate or feasible in other places. We strive to lead by example and elevate exemplars in our community so that others can learn from the best.
We enter partnerships through the lenses of trust and collaboration. Some principles that guide our grantmaking:
To maintain the deep relationships that we and our partners prefer, we invest in a limited number of organizations that are mission- and values-aligned. We rely on a referral system and currently do not accept unsolicited grant applications.
Beyond philanthropy, Henry and Susan Samueli have made substantial business investments that further enhance our community. They are the proud owners of the National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks, the American Hockey League’s San Diego Gulls, and OCVIBE, a one-of-a-kind immersive district in the center of Anaheim.
While the Samueli Foundation is the main expression of the Samueli family’s philanthropy, they also devote substantial resources to the broader community through corporate citizenship of their businesses, in addition to related nonprofit organizations including the Anaheim Ducks Foundation, the San Diego Gulls Foundation, and the Rinks Foundation.
